There is apparently some interaction between readline and ncurses insert mode, where readline made some invalid assumptions about invisible characters. And the code in readline/display.c is HAIRY - Hans' proposed hack that has been posted to this list is not a proper fix, just a workaround that hides the worst of the bug. I'm still working on getting a bash-3.0-8 ready for release (mainly for the tilde-expansion bug and the missing .info file).
