recompiling rxvt for 256 colors is not hard.

$ ./rxvt -help |head
Rxvt v2.7.10 - released: 26 MARCH 2003
Options:
XPM,transparent,utmp,menubar,multichar_languages,scrollbars=rxvt+NeXT+xt
erm,frills,linespace,256colour,.Xdefaults
