What exactly is the behavior you get, and what did you expect?  Of
*course* it would sit and spin there until you enter exactly one line of
text...  Once that happens, the script exits just fine (for me, at least).
Try invoking it as

echo "Blah" | ./dummy.pl

if you don't want to input from a terminal.
If the above doesn't work for you, we'll need to debug further.
