Hi Eric,
Sorry to bother you once again with two more questions:
1. How do I address the "mailing list"? By email or by posting it on a
specific forum?
2. Where do I get (download) the latest version of the coreutils (bin.exe)
package. A link would be great.
Thanks a lot for your efforts and I hope that I do not bother you too much
with my (maybe stupid) questions.
Cheers,
Rolf

Please keep replies on a mailing list, rather than to me personally - then
you might get more help, and it will be archived for future reference if
someone else encounters a similar problem. You still haven't told me what
system you are running on (hint: uname -a), whether it is cygwin or
something else. But, you are certainly using an outdated version of cp,
which would explain your bug. As I pointed out in
http://sources.redhat.com/ml/cygwin/2005-02/msg00081.html, coreutils 5.3.0
correctly creates a sparse file with --sparse=always when there are at
least 128k of 0s in the source, and preserves the sparse-ness of the
source with --sparse=auto.

If you want the latest version of cp.exe that I have precompiled and
tested for cygwin, see http://cygwin.com. And if you are using cygwin,
follow the bug-reporting directions of attaching the `cygcheck -svr'
output to your response. If you were using a mingw or DJGPP version, then
take your question to those lists for help.
