It's usually not a good idea to address Cygwin-related questions to

I don't use tcsh (which I'm guessing is your shell, based on the subject),
but I'd say it's a quoting problem.  In bash, you'd put the `...`
expression in double-quotes.  This is not Cygwin-specific at all, BTW.
