A careful reading of the info file for ksh
reveals the following near the bottom ...

BTW, the most frequently reported bug is
    echo hi | read a; echo $a   # Does not print hi
I'm aware of this and there is no need to report it.

I think this is related to what was observed.

What Svend reported was not a question of his,
but what ksh actually printed out. 
(I got it the first time as well, but not on subsequent tries)
