See 'man ls'.  Look for '--show-control-chars'.  BTW, this issue isn't 
Cygwin specific so if you run into similar problems with other utilities,
you'll want to refer to documentation locally and on the net.  You'll 
find similar questions and answers in the Cygwin archives too.
