The first run (mentioned above) were 196 iterations, I startet the
script again and got an error, not a hang, after 1987 iterations:

make: *** wait: Interrupted system call.  Stop.
make: *** Waiting for unfinished jobs....
make: *** Waiting for unfinished jobs....
make: *** Waiting for unfinished jobs....
make: *** Waiting for unfinished jobs....
make: *** Waiting for unfinished jobs....
make: *** Waiting for unfinished jobs....

I have a strace with malloc for this too, shall I put
it somewhere on the web?
