Ahh... sorry, I didn't read your initial posting thoroughly enough.
Well, others has to jump in here to get more detail.
All I know is that using/running non-cygwin(gcc) compiled binaries from
cygwin (shell and console) can have effects like this. I'd call it a minor
incompatibility between the runtime libraries.
