In the past, it just displayed the package versions.  Since most of the
time I'm only interested in the package version, I would prefer that the
sanity check be optional.

FWIW, rpm seems to separate the query and verify operations:

    $ rpm -q textutils
    textutils-2.0.11-7
    $ rpm -V textutils
    $
