I assume that you must not have correctly replaced your copy of
/lib/libc.a:

  % ls -l libc.a
  ls -l libc.a
  -rwxrwxrwx    1 root     cgf        741756 Aug  5 23:29 libc.a
  % sum libc.a
  31407   725
