I forgot the for authorized_keys...

There are three others you can try:

  ssh-keygen -t dsa
  ssh $hostname tee -a .ssh/authorized_keys2 < ~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub
2>>/dev/null

or:

  ssh-keygen -t rsa1
  ssh $hostname tee -a .ssh/authorized_keys < ~/.ssh/identity.pub
2>>/dev/null

or:

  ssh-keygen -t rsa
  ssh $hostname tee -a .ssh/authorized_keys < ~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub 2>>/dev/null

You might also want to check the ownership of your home directory and .ssh
directory, as that is the only thing I can think of that would cause the
touch error in your previous message. If ownership or permissions are
wrong, then sshd defaults to require a password rather than trusting that
nobody else has changed the key files.

                Bill
