If you'd written the first SMB server for Unix (no, not Samba), you
wouldn't confuse them. I'm talking about an SMB server with full file
and print sharing written by Locus Computing Corp. for AT&T in the mid
Eighties. We even made extensions to the SMB protocol for remote
printer sharing administration and remote execution on the Unix host.
To bad that software seems to have disappeared from the face of the
Earth. It was just about the best project I ever worked on in the
corporate world.
