This is according to the information on the bash info page:

   For almost every purpose, shell functions are preferred over aliases.

The section on aliases preceding that phrase lists the limitations of the
alias mechanism.  FWIW, the bash man page contains a similar sentiment.

I should have clarified, however, that the above P.S. only refers to bash.
Aliases are still very much alive and used in csh and other shells.
