Subject: | cygwin setup keeps downgrading perl 5.8 -> 5.6 |
NOTE: I am not on the list. Please reply directly. Why does cygwin setup want to downgrade perl from 5.8 to 5.6? Is this intentional or accidental? The following excerpt from http://archive.progeny.com/cygwin/setup.ini shows 5.8 is listed under a [test] section. @ perl sdesc: "Larry Wall's Practical Extracting and Report Language" ldesc: "Perl is a high-level programming language with roots in C, sed, awk and shell scripting. Perl is good at handling processes and files, and is especially good at handling text. Perl's hallmarks are practicality and efficiency. While it is used to do a lot of different things, Perl's most common applications are system administration utilities and web programming. A large proportion of the CGI scripts on the web are written in Perl. You need the perl package installed on your system so that your system can handle Perl scripts." category: Interpreters requires: cygwin gdbm version: 5.6.1-2 install: release/perl/perl-5.6.1-2.tar.bz2 6519925 d0bf481529040f142182b69cbef141bb source: release/perl/perl-5.6.1-2-src.tar.bz2 5373358 30abc1e494147d11c17d90d8105fe6cf [test] version: 5.8.0-1 install: release/perl/perl-5.8.0-1.tar.bz2 6611750 6bbd660567ca9e95ccff5c0a59383937 source: release/perl/perl-5.8.0-1-src.tar.bz2 11187748 a0bbf2e56f3725480a23dd4ab20e7c3b I couldn't find the web page that explained what [test] means. With this setup you have to catch cygwin each time you run setup to upgrade other packages, otherwse it will do the downgrade by default. (i.e you have to select "Keep" for perl). -- Unsubscribe info: http://cygwin.com/ml/#unsubscribe-simple Bug reporting: http://cygwin.com/bugs.html Documentation: http://cygwin.com/docs.html FAQ: http://cygwin.com/faq/
