This is a good question for the email archives.  It's been 
asked and answered more than once.

Cygwin curently supports only 32 bit word sizes.  The tools 
will have trouble with file sizes larger than 4GB.

I'm trying to work with a 22G (yes, gigabyte) and have 
noticed problems with
	ls		(wrong file size, significant over report)
	tail		(doesn't catch end of file)
I don't know about other utilities, but I wanted to get
these reported ....

BTW, I greatly appreciate CYGWIN.
