W98/SE, just a timing comparison.
As before: this snapshot is knocking spots off the current cygwin1.dll, at
least in respect of this one benchtest: take a 80MB file 0.uue and
    time cat 0.uue | nice --1 dd of=/dev/null # current
    1m12s
    time cat 0.uue | nice --1 dd of=/dev/null # snapshot
    0m24s
    time cat 0.uue | nice --1 dd of=1.uue # snapshot
    0m34s
    md5sum *.uue
    d1c39bc5b58a1b29b311dc3bd92c1834 *0.uue
