Can't you get the number of files from setup.ini?

I think, it was a case that they didn't know how long it was
going to take.  If they had a progress bar they'd know exactly,
if the files were in alphabetical order they'd at least have
an idea that it was comming to an end ;)

Would it be reasonable to switch MD5 off?  It ends up
being checked 3 or 4 times around here as different people
install cygwin...

I've still not checked it with a new installation though :(
for some reason, nobody wanted to delete theirs!
