try: $ gcc -v filename.c
in order to get some diagnostic output about
what gcc is doing.  

For problem reports, include:

$ uname -r
$ # command version
$ gcc --version
$ # command that is causing the problem
$ gcc <options> <filenames>
$ # output

and possibly the source code of a file
that demonstrates the problem.
