If you want to read a file '/usr/test/text.txt' with ActiveState Perl you need to translate the paths to Windows syntax (-> 'C:\cygwin\usr\test\text.txt'). There are tools included with Cygwin to help with this (cygpath.exe), but it is a pita. Cygwin Perl is linked against cygwin1.dll and all this translation is done automatically for you.
