Alex,
The /etc/passwd looks ok (assuming you have no users other than the
adminstrator).  Is it readable by the administrator?
This could have happened if you've introduced ntsec into your CYGWIN
environment variable, and your /etc/passwd wasn't readable by the
administrator.  Also, the `pwd` looks wrong, what's the output of mount on
your machine?
Another possibility is if you've lost your registry settings and SIDs,
which could happen if you've reinstalled Win2k.
