I typically have my shell windows set to have several thousand lines of
scrollback history.  As soon as you run vi, it blanks everything except
the current lines on view (which are re-drawn when you exit vi, of
course).

So, you can scroll back, but only to see emptiness - vast tracts of
white space.  All your session history (especially, command output) is
completely wiped.  Except for those last 42 or whatever that are still
on display in the window, at the end.
