First: Reply only to the cygwin AT cygwin DOT com mailing list.  You are having a
conversation with the mailing list, not with me.

Second: You did not try the command:

> > mkpasswd -u $USER -d >> /etc/passwd

Do you notice the difference between what I wrote and what you ran?  You
left out the ">>".
