In response to a problem me and a few others have had using 'man', I believe 
the problem is with the latest version of gzip, included in the base 
package. The version number is 1.3.1. The problem only arises if you use the 
/usr/man/catx directories to gzip and store preformatted man documents. 
Those files are corrupted by gzip, but apparantly it doesn't happen with the 
older 1.2.x gzip.
