Garry,

The easiest way I know is to use an alias. For example:

alias ls='ls -ACF --color=auto'

See the ls man page for more info:

        --color[=WHEN]
               control whether color is used to  distinguish  file
               types.  WHEN may be `never', `always', or `auto'
