Better don't change the file coming with the distro. Either change or
create your own ~/.profile or ~/.bashrc file or, if you need a systemwide
setting, add a file with ".sh" suffix to /etc/profile.d.

You don't. ssh isn't a terminal, it's a communication tool.
When running in an ssh session, do you have $TERM set properly for
the terminal type you're using?
