From the top of 'info cat':

| `cat': Concatenate and write files
| ==================================
|
|    `cat' copies each FILE (`-' means standard input), or standard input
| if none are given, to standard output.  Synopsis:

Have you tried 'cat >> somefilename' or 'cat - >> somefilename'?
