Are you aware that Unix/Linux is case-sensitive?  So Makefile and MAKEFILE
are different files?  If your makefile is named MAKEFILE, try renaming it
Makefile and use make again.

I have been using cygwin with gcc, postgresql, wxWindows, python and many
other things on Windows XP Pro for ~ 6 months.  The only applications that
do not work on the system is CVS and wxPython.
