I've deleted all files and started again. When I performed the installation last time I thought "Default" would mean that that item would be installed. This time round I chose "Install" (rather than "Default") for everything and now all is OK. Thanks to everyone for pointing out that gcc (and many other things) are already included in the cygwin package. John Name: John B.
