I had a similar error trying to run a configure script under cygwin. I
solved it the brute force way -- deleting the couple of lines in the
script that caused the error.
I noticed on the mingw mailing list that a similar error was reported
when using MSYS (which is based on cygwin) to run configure scripts.
You might want to check there.
Sorry I don't have more to add. At the time I thought the error was
specific to the program I was compiling and did not pay much attention
to it. However, it may be more generic.
