Oops -- misinformation alert.  A:/fred/george works in windows GUI file 
dialogs; it DOESN'T work in cmd.exe.  (I use 'raw' cmd.exe so rarely 
anymore, I somehow conflated "windows GUI file dialogs" with cmd.exe. 
sorry)
