It's a restriction given by the ANSI function calls in Windows, resp. a restriction of 9x/Me. These functions don't take paths longer than MAX_PATH as parameter. On NT/2K/XP we *could* use the Unicode functions which allow paths up to 32000 characters but that requires massively changes to the Cygwin path handling code. That will not happen soon as long as we don't have somebody volunteering for creating the required patches.
