Just in case it happens to anybody else during a new install (but I guess it
was finger problems with me?) :

After making a comparison with a working system on a 2nd machine it emerged
that, for whatever reason, (a) the directory /home/ was not created during
install, and (b) the file /etc/passwd contained the line

    Fergus::500:544::Fergus:/bin/bash

I recovered the position by (a) creating the directory /home/ and (b)
editing the file /etc/passwd so that it contained the line

    Fergus::500:544::/home/Fergus:/bin/bash

Fergus
