I have a friend that just installed cygwin from scratch in a XP release
2600 and gets the same error any time bash tryes to execute something,
also ls.exe

C:\cygwin\bin\ls.exe: *** Couldn't reserve space for cygwin's heap
(0xAF0000) in child, cygheap, Win32 error 487
