If you're running in a console window it should be set to "cygwin". If the remote machine doesn't know the terminal type "cygwin", just copy the termcap/terminfo entries from the Cygwin machine to the appropriate place on the remote machine. Otherwise, try a developer snapshot of Cygwin and if that doesn't help, you will have to debug that using strace or gdb.
