Sigh.

I am glad you were able to figure out a way to solve the problem -- as 
it happens, you discovered the correct solution (although I would 
recommend -- and have recommended -- that you use setup.exe to reinstall 
the libncurses5 package, instead of manually untar'ing the package...)
