in the script: /grass5/etc/init.sh the following statements occur ($GISBASE
has been previously given a value), and it doesn't seem to like my $PATH,
giving the same three errors that the appended output shows.

PATH=$GISBASE/bin:$GISBASE/scripts:$PATH
export PATH

Please consider the appended output from the commands shown and the problem
will be obvious.  The question, of course, is how to fix it.

Any insights would be appreciated.
