Put the following two lines into /usr/local/bin/start:
#!/bin/sh
cmd /c start `cygpath -w $*`

Then, chmod a+x /usr/local/bin/start

Now you can do this:

$ start try.doc

Or my personal favorite:

$ start . [opens the current directory in an explorer window]

Voila.
