Well then something is wrong someplace because I only typed perl
Makefile.PL. Then I got the X problems and upgraded my X installation to
4.1 and got the same problems.

UNLESS, because the X stuff was found, it tried to use it automagically?

Hmm, I'll try two things. First perl Makefile.PL x. Then delete the X
installation try perl Makefile.PL.
