Not really a relevant question for the cygwin list. Suggest
automake AT gnu DOT org and autoconf AT gnu DOT org as more appropriate lists.

However, here are some starting points:

excellent intro to autoconf, automake, libtool, etc. plus good
discussion of portability issues in c, c++ and shell scripts.

I intend to use C. I have no experience with autoconf/m4, automake. Are
