Yes, the check breaks on cygwin. May be, replacing it with AC_TRY_RUN a
pogram that contains
open("/dev/ptmx", O_RDWR)
would be a better idea (and it will have the same implication on cross
compiling).

Somebody has created them but cygwin does not use these files.
