I guess I didn't read your post carefully enough.  I thought you were 
saying I had to install a non-standard version of the package to get both.

I don't know what "step" you are referring to.  The readline-4.2-3
package contains both the new cygreadline5.dll and the old
cygreadline4.dll.  So, the "old" postgres will keep working as usual;
eventually a "new" postgres will be released and then *I* will be able
to remove cygreadline4.dll from the package.

I don't see where you or your users need to do anything special.  I'm
confused.
