Chris, I finally got around to doing a strace on make. I did not find 
//  or \\ in the strace log nor the make output.

BTW the misbehavior has existed since Net Release 1.1.8 on my Win95 only. It
only happens on a pretty complex make -- the XFree86 makefile.
OTOH, on my Win98, make and configure scripts behave quite well -- so
thanks to your team. I'm just going to use Win98 for most compiles.
