For history of X, see "The X window system" by Robert Scheifler and Jim 
Gettys. W was the windowing system for the V research project at Stanford 
(W was Paul Asente's thesis topic at Stanford), a good chunk of which 
Sheifler at MIT used to implement X (1984), and then came the first public
release in 1985, Project Athena, X consortium ...
