No. In my step 3 below I doubleclicked on the cygwin icon, and cygwin
opened the black window. (This is the window I subsequently ran
cygcheck from). However, to try to run gcc I opened a separate new DOS
command window, and tried to compile from the new DOS window. I did
this because in the 'expectations for Windows programmers' section of
the cygwin website (user's guide?) it seemed to say this would work. I
didn't try running gcc from the cygwin window because it seemed like a
'UNIX-like' interface, and I don't know UNIX commands.

edit->mark didn't work because I could only mark the last (visible) part
of the output. '> file.txt did the trick. The output is immediately
below. Perhaps this will enable you to diagnose my problem.
