yes.  don't  change  the term type to vt100. instead, to make vi work,
copy  file  '/usr/share/terminfo/c/cygwin'  (distributed  in  ncurses
package)  to  ~/.terminfo/c/cygwin  on the sun box, and leave $TERM as
is.
