I was just musing about having a packaging system that allows a pre/post-
install scripts, and in which case, this is a trivial task. You're of 
course correct for the usual case of .tar.gz package that is just unpacked.

Not really as such. Please try the following after deleting your
/usr/info/dir:
  
  $ info g77

and see if it will help you track down the FAQ entry. Of course, if you
just typed `info' after that, it will.
