Subject: Oracle8i Personal Edition (free download) does not create database
To: cygwin AT cygwin DOT com
MIME-Version: 1.0

Dear Mr. Flyor,

Dear Mr. Faylor,

When installing Oracle8i free-downloaded from
Oracle.com it does not create any database at all. The
steps I followed are:

1st: I downloaded a copy of Oracle8i Personal Edition
"psoracle816nt.zip' for WinNT from the Oracel free
download site, onto a computer at the library of the
University of Amsterdam.

2nd: I copied the "psoracle816nt.zip' onto a CD using
the CD-Rwriter.

3rd: I downloaded the installation instruction from
Oracle support site "Oracle8i Installation Issues on
Windows"

4th: Then I unzipped the "psoracle816nt.zip" to the
C:\temp of my computer at home from the CD. By doing
this it created all the necessary sub-directories on
the C:\temp on my computer.

5th: Then I followed the instruction step-by-step as
mentioned in the "Oracle8i Installation Issues on
Windows" and tried to install Oracle8i Personal
Edition onto my computer. At the time of installation
my computer has 128Mb RAM and 1.89Gb disk space.

6th: Everything runs smoothly and the installation
program installs all the Oracle8i tools. The only
porblem is it does NOT create or copy any DATABASE for
Oracle8i at all.

The Pre-requisite Requirement for system
administration of the "Oracle8i Installation Issues on
Windows" (nr. 5 in page 8/10) mentions that I will nee
to install a Posix standard Unix shell package on NT
and it mentions the --
http://www.cygnus.com/cygwin/''.

I mentioned this to Oracle.com, but they said that it
is not neccessary to install. Now, my question is what
do I exactly need to install Oracle8i Personal Edition
(a free download) how do I install.

For the reasons I cannot tell you, I do not have a
direct access to internet from my computer at home. I
need to download the neccessary 'cygnus files' onto
the computer at the library of the University of
Amsterdam. Then zip the download onto floppy-disk and
them go home and try to install onto my computer. I
just want to make my problem very clear so that you
will be able to help me.

Thank you and I hope to hearing from you soon.

Yours sincerely,

Dev
