Everyone should at least take a look at ACE/TAO at
http://www.cs.wustl.edu/~schmidt/
It's a pretty amazing accomplishment. ACE is sort of an OS abstraction layer
with C++ libs for programming with patterns, like in the book "Design
patterns". A really good set of tools that can be used for a wide variety of
projects.
TAO is a CORBA package built on top of ACE.
