Simplest way is to search for a nonexistant string. I haven't yet found a quicker way. Perhaps someone else has? Searching for a pattern highlights every occurrance found. But that highlighting seems to stick, even on other files, and even if I get a new shell through cygwin (either before, or after closing the current).
